Our Approach

The Excellence Lab is a community-based supplementary education model built on the belief that learning must be coherent across settings and relationships. We address educational inequity not as an abstract policy concern, but as a daily lived reality for students who need more than existing systems can provide. As a reparative intervention in Cambridge, we intentionally reach the communities most directly impacted by historic and ongoing inequities.

Demand already exceeds our current capacity, proving that Cambridge families recognize and trust this model.

The Excellence Lab supports high-need Cambridge students in grades 4–8 through community-based supplementary education that strengthens academic achievement, personal wellness, and civic identity.

By partnering with families, local organizations, and university mentors, the Lab uses Cambridge itself as a living classroom. This relationship-driven model provides students with consistent support, meaningful experiences, and the skills they need to succeed in school and navigate their future with confidence.

How we do it

The Excellence Lab is specifically designed for students who thrive through applied, interactive, and relational instruction rather than passive formats. Our cohort overwhelmingly identifies as visual and hands-on learners, and we provide the individualized accommodations necessary for the significant portion of our participants who require an IEP or 504 Plan. By centering our curriculum on writing, math, organization, and science excellence, we bridge the gap between student potential and academic performance, ensuring every learner can navigate their future with confidence.

The Student Profile & Academic Focus

In alignment with the City of Cambridge and the American Freedmen Commission, The Excellence Lab acts as a reparative educational intervention addressing the systemic denial of opportunity. This program is a local, relational, and data-informed model for transitional justice within the descendant community. To meet the demand of our 26-student waitlist and expand our research in math and science, we are currently seeking partnerships at the $25,000, $50,000, and $80,000 levels to ensure this vital work continues to reach those most directly impacted.
